Rebooting My Brain is the true story of what happens when you get yanked out of your life by a crisis and have to get back on the ride all over again. With refreshing candor, Maria Ross shares how the relentless pace of her life came to a screeching halt when an undetected brain aneurysm ruptured and nearly killed her. Along her stubborn road back to health, her resulting cognitive and emotional challenges forced her sometimes kicking and screaming to reframe her life, her work and her identity. With humor and heart, Ross shares what it was like being blind for six weeks, how a TV crime drama and a brain-games website played key roles in her recovery, and why a handmade necklace helped her regain her sense of self.

Ross reveals the keys to her extraordinary comeback and how her perspective is forever changed, mostly for the better. Funny, touching and real, this book not only shares an inspirational story of transformation but enlightens readers about the surprising effects of brain injury... and explores the question,How do our brains define who we are?

Rebooting My Brain How a Freak Aneurysm Reframed My Life (Audible Audio Edition) Maria Ross Red Slice Press Books

For the past thirteen months I have been the caregiver to my husband who suffered a traumatic brain injury. I was riveted to my ereader while devouring Maria Ross's book. It was as if Maria was peering into the window of my life.

Her struggle is like so many other people's struggle with a brain injury, but what I liked about this book is that it was told from the perspective of the patient. She gave me so much insight into what is going on inside my husband's head, what he's feeling and thinking. I now understand him so much better than I did before.

I laughed in a lot of places because Ross tells her story with such humor. And I cried in a few places because I knew where her pain and the unanswered questions were coming from.

Even if you don't know anyone with a brain injury, I highly recommend this book. Its a quick, well-written read. If you do know someone with a brain injury then I consider this book a must-read.

Rebooting My Brain How a Freak Aneurysm Reframed My Life (Audible Audio Edition) Maria Ross Red Slice Press Books Reviews

The author has a brilliant way of writing. Without a doubt we will hear from her again in book form, as it would be waste if she never wrote again! The subject is interesting, her Aneurysm, and how things played out. Who of us hasn't know someone who has suffered from this? If you don't then you are lucky. The outcome also seems to be the same as strokes, and there is a lot to learn of how her mind worked, and how she recovered. IMHO I learned why my mother in law said what she did in her dying days after her stroke. But there is far more lessons to be learned in this book. Why did she have such a supportive family and friends? Because that make a big difference in the recovery. IMHO she lead the life that supports good friends to happen. In order to have friends, and as close and helpful friends as she had, you have to be the kind of person that would have done the same if the tables were turned. It will make want to be that kind of friend, even FIND those kinds of friends, without ever having that kind of disaster happen to you. Because you will miss so much in life without them. God bless the husband she was wise (and lucky enough) to chose.

Good wishes to you Marie. I may never know you but I feel I know you through this wonderful book. May you write many more books.
I can't remember how I stumbled over this book in the first place, or how long I've had it on my kindle. I am lucky enough to be healthy and have not been confronted with brain damage, neither directly nor through loved ones. However, as Maria said herself, most of the lessons she had to learn apply just as much to any next person.
I usually try to remember to be grateful for where I am and what I've got. Just now I am at a point where it isn't that easy though and I often find myself feeling miserable and sorry for myself. What a perfect time to come across this book! Maria has reminded me to be thankful for the wonderful people I have in my life and to allow the heart-warming thought that I have actually brought them into my life and kept them close myself.
I am far from such an extreme turning point as she had to tackle. Still, her words have struck a chord in me and given me a bit of a boost to take on my own challenges. And seeing I only tripped over this gem because I had to re-establish all folders and contents of around 600 books) on a new device - and not without complaining loudly, I might add - this proves once more true the old word of wisdom things happen for a reason. In this case, me reading Maria's story at the right time to give me that kick in the butt.

Thank you Maria, for sharing this part of your life and for encouraging people to accept things they can't change and to rise to the challenge when they can.
Thank you Maria for telling your story and, of course, Paul's story as he traveled through this time with you. In Sept, 2016 I experienced a brain aneurysm. It was not until the first week in November that I knew what happened to me and I have no memory of the first 5 weeks in the hospital. My last 2 weeks are my only memory of the hospital time, not too great but I do remember some things. My life partner, Neil, is the reason I am here today. Like Maria and Paul we are grateful for the gift of life, overwhelmed at times and I am not even @ one year however everything is going so very good. A major difference is that I am about double your age so the odds of doing well were even less for me. My wonderful neurosurgeons have explained that I am a 3% survivor. I do struggle at times, get very tired, do battle with memory, and have "brain games" that I play to keep working at getting my brain to work better. As I read your book, I smiled at times , felt teary when I recognized my struggles, and the parallels of our life through our brain aneurysms was unreal. Mine was 2 aneurysms, 1 ruptured & then I needed a shunt to keep the brain pressure level. Both aneurysms needed to be coiled. Your book was a light moment because there are those times that I feel ungrateful, guilty, and upset because RECOVERY IS SO SLOW!! Next thought is - "I am alive, functioning and doing beyond what everyone expected".. Thank you again.
I have no idea how Maria Ross could have written the story of my life almost to a "T". But wait, she had a brain aneurysm in 2008 I had one in 2003, and except for the blindness, and never going back to work, because of the crainiotomy and cognitive issues, Maria and i could be the same person. She could also stand in the shoes of so many people with Acquired Brain Injury. The book shows those without an injury and carers, just what it is like in our world. Like her, I never realised the extent of my injury, nor how far i had come in my rehab. Unlike her I did not have a whole host of family and friends for support, and i certainly would not have been able to tackle a book at my 2 year mark. Congratulations on such an achievement. This book should be recognised in the medical world, and would be a very valuable asset for anyone who is faced with such an injury.

We might look the same on the outside, but inside is a very different story!!
